FAQ

Before you
install it.

These come up the most. If yours isn’t here, email liyuhao658@gmail.com, or use “Feedback” inside the app.

Do I need an account?

No. No account, no phone number, no email verification. Download it, open it, write your first line.

Can you read my journal?

No. Trace has no content server of its own; your writing stays on your device by default. With sync on, it moves through your own private iCloud, handled entirely by Apple. There is no path from the developer to your content.

What happens when I change phones?

Either route works: turn on multi-device sync (your own iCloud) and sign the new phone into the same Apple Account, or export a complete zip backup from “My Data” and import it on the new device.

Does it need to be online?

No. Every core feature works fully offline. Only iCloud sync, map tiles and purchases need a connection.

Is the free version enough?

Writing has no cap — entries, goals, people and to-dos are all unlimited. The free limits are 3 media per entry, 5 important dates and 5 notebooks; sealing letters, PDF export, notebook video and Live Activities are Pro. Every new user gets 30 days of full Pro, so you can try all of it first.

Will the 30-day trial charge me?

No. It isn’t a subscription trial and it doesn’t ask for a payment method — the 30 days of full access are simply granted. When they end you drop back to free, and nothing you’ve written goes anywhere.

Which languages does it support?

English, Japanese, Korean, Simplified Chinese and Traditional Chinese. The app is called Trace in English, Japanese and Korean, and 知己 in Chinese.

Is there an iPad or Mac version?

Not yet — Trace is an iPhone app today.

Is there an Android version?

Not yet.

Can I export my data?

Yes. “My Data” exports a zip containing all your text and media, and your journal can also be exported as an A4 PDF book (Pro).

How do I cancel a subscription?

In iOS Settings → your Apple Account → Subscriptions. Note that wiping your data or deleting the app does not cancel a subscription.

Something’s wrong — who do I talk to?

Email liyuhao658@gmail.com, or use “Feedback” inside the app.
